PS5 Models Explained: CFI Numbers, Slim, Digital, Pro

July 24, 2026 · Updated · Hardware & Tech
In Short

The PS5 models fall into three families, each with its own model number: CFI-1000, CFI-1100 and CFI-1200 are the original-size consoles sold from November 2020 to 2023, CFI-2000 is the smaller PS5 Slim that replaced them in November 2023, and CFI-7000 is the PS5 Pro from November 2024. A trailing letter separates the disc version (A) from the Digital Edition (B), and the two digits before it mark the region. Only the Pro performs differently. The other revisions changed size, weight, chip manufacturing and storage.

Sony has sold more PS5 models than the single launch design suggests. The PlayStation 5 arrived on November 12, 2020 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, with the rest of the world following on November 19. Since then Sony has changed the internals twice, replaced the whole chassis in 2023, added the PS5 Pro in 2024 and cut the Digital Edition’s storage in 2025. Every one of these PS5 models plays the same library. The differences sit in size, disc support, storage and price, and US prices have risen twice since August 2025. If you are coming from the previous generation, the sticker logic matches the PS4 model guide, with CFI taking the place of CUH.

The prices above are launch prices. Sony raised US prices by $50 per console on August 21, 2025, and again on April 2, 2026. Its price notice of March 27, 2026 lists the current recommended prices as $649.99 for the disc PS5, $599.99 for the Digital Edition and $899.99 for the Pro.

How to Tell Which PS5 Model You Have

Stand the console upright and read the label on the bottom. If a stand is attached, take it off first. A typical number looks like CFI-1215A: the letters CFI, four digits, then a letter. The first two digits give the family (10, 11, 12, 20 or 70), the last two digits give the region, and the letter marks disc (A) or Digital Edition (B). Per the list compiled by mein-mmo, 15 is the US, Canada and Mexico, 16 Europe and 00 Japan, so a CFI-1215A is a third-revision disc console sold in North America. The Pro follows the same pattern with a suffix, such as CFI-7019 for North America and CFI-7021 for Europe.

If the console still boots, Sony points to Settings, System, System Software, Console Information for the serial number. Size also narrows things down. The original is the largest of the three, the Slim is roughly a third smaller by volume, and the Pro matches the original’s height with the Slim’s width. For a quick lookup of any number you find, the model decoder covers the PS5 families, and how old is my console turns a manufacture date into a rough production year.

Original PS5 Revisions: CFI-1000, CFI-1100, CFI-1200

The launch console is the widest and heaviest: 4.5 kg with the disc drive, 3.9 kg without it, and a rated draw of 350 W against 340 W for the Digital Edition, according to Sony’s launch release. Both versions share the same custom processor and the same 825 GB SSD, so the Digital Edition differs only by the missing drive and a slightly slimmer case.

The CFI-1100 appeared in August 2021 with a smaller heatsink and a stand screw that no longer needs a screwdriver. An early teardown measured temperatures a few degrees higher and spooked buyers. Digital Foundry and Gamers Nexus then tested old and new side by side and concluded that, “in all practical terms, there is no meaningful difference between PS5s old and new.”

The CFI-1200 turned up in September 2022 and was the first with a smaller chip. Teardown reports describe a 6 nm APU in place of the 7 nm one, a die shrink from roughly 300 mm² to 260 mm², with the whole console reported as up to 600 g lighter than a launch unit. Of the original-size consoles, the CFI-1200 is therefore the leanest on weight and power, even though all three perform alike.

PS5 Slim (CFI-2000) and the 825 GB Digital Edition

Sony announced the redesign in October 2023, and it reached US stores on November 10. It cut the volume by more than 30%, took 18% off the disc version’s weight and 24% off the Digital Edition’s, and raised internal storage to 1 TB. The disc console launched at $499.99, unchanged, while the Digital Edition rose from $399.99 to $449.99. The disc drive became a detachable part: a Digital Edition owner can buy it for $79.99 and attach it at any time. A horizontal stand ships in the box and a vertical stand costs $29.99 extra.

In September 2025 a revised Digital Edition began appearing, first in Europe and by early October in the US, with 825 GB instead of 1 TB at the same price. The model number is CFI-2100, and a European example is CFI-2116. The disc version kept its 1 TB drive. Sony did not announce the change, so the box and the model number are the only reliable guides when you shop.

PS5 Pro Release Date and Price History

Sony announced the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024 and released it on November 7, 2024 at $699.99. It ships with a 2 TB SSD and a faster GPU, but with neither a disc drive nor a stand in the box. The vertical stand sold for $29.99 and the drive for $79.99. The Pro’s price rose to $749.99 in August 2025 and to $899.99 in April 2026. Japan received the first model number, CFI-7000, and North America’s launch units carry CFI-7019. Sony’s manuals later added a CFI-71xx family. A Japanese comparison of the two manuals found identical power draw, dimensions and weight of about 3.1 kg, with the newer manual adding the disc formats the drive reads.

Disc Drive, Storage and Other Differences That Matter

The detachable drive works only with the Slim Digital Edition and the Pro. Retailer listings quote Sony’s wording that it is for Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 group or the Pro, which means the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot take it. For storage, Sony supports M.2 SSDs from 250 GB to 8 TB across the lineup. Sony also sells a Japan-only Digital Edition since November 21, 2025, locked to Japanese accounts and priced at ¥55,000, but it is not sold elsewhere.

Across the different models of PS5, three things decide a purchase: whether a disc drive is present, how much internal storage the console starts with (825 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB), and size. Processor speed enters the picture only for the Pro.

Which PS5 Model to Buy in 2026

For most people the Slim with the disc drive is the straightforward pick. At Sony’s April 2026 prices the gap between disc and Digital Edition is $50, while the drive alone launched at $79.99, so the Digital Edition only saves money if you never expect to insert a disc. Skip the 825 GB Digital Edition if you install many large games, because it starts at the same size as the 2020 consoles. A secondhand original works fine, and a CFI-1200 is the best of that group, but expect it to take far more shelf space than a Slim. The Pro makes sense for players with a 4K display who want its extra graphics headroom and accept a price $250 above the disc Slim, plus a drive purchase if you own discs.

Stands, Cables and What Else Comes in the Box

The original consoles include a stand, the Slim includes a horizontal stand, and the Pro includes none. Sony’s separate $29.99 vertical stand is listed as compatible with every PS5 model, old ones included, and each console ships with a DualSense controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which PS5 model do I have?

Stand the console upright, remove the base if one is attached, and read the label on the bottom. The model number starts with CFI followed by four digits and a letter, for example CFI-1215A. CFI-10xx, 11xx and 12xx are the original-size consoles, CFI-20xx is the PS5 Slim and CFI-70xx is the PS5 Pro. The letter A marks a disc console and B a Digital Edition.

What is the difference between the PS5 Digital Edition and the disc version?

The Digital Edition has no disc drive. Sony's launch release states that both original models use the same custom processor and the same SSD. The original Digital Edition cannot take a drive later, but the Slim Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro can use Sony's detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, which launched at $79.99.

When did the PS5 Pro come out and what did it cost?

Sony released the PS5 Pro on November 7, 2024 at $699.99, after announcing it on September 10, 2024. It has a 2 TB SSD and no disc drive or stand in the box. Sony raised the Pro to $749.99 in August 2025 and to $899.99 on April 2, 2026.

What is the difference between CFI-1000, CFI-1100 and CFI-1200?

They are the three revisions of the original-size PS5. The CFI-1100 (August 2021) has a smaller heatsink and a screwless stand attachment. The CFI-1200 (first reported September 2022) moved to a 6 nm chip and is lighter with lower power draw. Digital Foundry and Gamers Nexus found no meaningful practical difference between old and new units.

Did Sony reduce the storage on the PS5 Slim Digital Edition?

Yes. From September 2025 a revised Digital Edition (model CFI-2100, for example CFI-2116) began shipping with an 825 GB SSD instead of 1 TB, at the same price. It appeared in Europe first and reached the US in early October 2025. The disc version of the Slim kept its 1 TB drive.

Which PS5 model should I buy in 2026?

For most players the PS5 Slim with the disc drive is the best fit. Sony's April 2026 prices put it at $649.99 against $599.99 for the Digital Edition, and the drive alone launched at $79.99. The PS5 Pro costs $899.99 and suits players with a 4K display who want extra graphics headroom.
