What’s Cookin’: 11-Oct-08

I would like to preface this blog post by letting everyone know that I am NOT a professional programmer or web designer at all – as I am sure that you have already ascertained this much.  That being said, while things may seem quiet here on the VGCL front, they are far from it!  It just takes me a little while to code the various enhancements (or so I would like to think) for the site.  Also, lest not forgot I do have a certain need to eat every now and again – my day job takes priority and allows me to do just that.  Enough of my gripes, let's get on to the updates!

Picture Display

Previously, all pictures just opened up in a new window – kind of standard but nothing at all appealing.  I came across a Javascript program by Torstein HonsiHighslide JS.  I have to admit this is probably one of the coolest scripts I have ever seen.  I could take a paragraph or two to describe it, but it would be much easier just to show you.  Click here for a console page that has already been upgraded for an example.

Pretty cool?? Yes it is!!!  This has been incorporated into every non-console page and I am working on the console pages right now – taking a break from them for this update to you.  I should have all existing pages updated in the next two weeks.

Page Redesign

There have been a number of items that have been changed for the general layout of the individual pages.  I removed the 'color columns' that bordered all of our pages (I am still working on the console pages). Eliminating these will give us around 100 pixels of workable real estate, plus make it much easier to change to a % based column system (to fill the display of any screen res) from its current hard coded state.

A background picture has been added to the area outside the main content table.  We tried a couple of different ones and we agreed that we did not want anything too busy at all – just something to compliment the website.  Dark Watcher found the picture and colorized it to match our color scheme.  I think it turned out great.

More pictures have been incorporated throughout the various pages.  Our Front Page was too text heavy – we agreed we needed to change it.  The currently displayed FP is still being worked upon to incorporate more variations in the main picture display (though I am kind of partial to that pic – it is part of my set-up :) ).

The goal for this redesign was to present a very clean, crisp and easy to navigate look.  We also wanted to give our visitors what we most like from sites we frequent – great variety and the use of all available media types to further enhance the written content.  I would sincerely like to hear your thoughts on our efforts!

Well that should do it for now.  I do thank you for your patience while we work hard to give you the best information and website for all of your console needs.  See you again soon!
